poem: thirsty from the sweat I’m spilling
thirsty from the sweat I’m spilling
coupled with the tears
please be first to move ahead
and end these many years
lock the box and toss the key
and I’ll lay down to rest
’cause staring at the sky a while
is prob’ly for the best
poem: bashing my brains on the keys
bashing my brains on the keys
as it rains
and he pleads for a strike
of write-lightning to stain
this new date
it’s a pain that I willingly take
zdbd – I’m Not Satisfied
The opening “yeahs” set the stage for this multi-vocalled song, where Zappa speak-sings over the melancholy chorus of his bandmates. The jilting, staccato rhythm of the chorus is compelling, and builds to an unusual variation on the main theme, integrating the same “yeahs” from the opening with a growing orchestral section. The production continues in this dynamic vein, as Zappa’s laments continue. The structure is standard verse-chorus fare, but the production and arrangement elevates this simple tune.
The “yeahs” will return in a very similar form soon, as we’ll see. The close of the song conjures images of grand, Hollywood musicals, as the orchestra shifts keys, building to the grand finale.
