poem: today I saw a torn-up bird

today I saw a torn-up bird
ruby-grey drumstick splayed on the pavement
feathers like the falling leaves to come

charcoal-blue so vivid ‘gainst
the no-colour beneath
shredded, leaving royal purple seams
pieces bathed in warm
September sun
