A cheesy, upbeat tune, further in the novelty-song direction than some of Zappa’s work. The structure is a bluesy, with, if I had to guess, a I-IV-V pattern. This 2.5 minute piece tells the sad story about love coming apart — Emma “was my steady date / until she put on weight, mhmm.”
Special credit goes out to the clarinet trilling throughout the hook and verses, the bridge-like “mum-mum-mum” part, and the instrumental “sock it to me” section.
Overall, an easy-listening but vaguely nutrient-free song in an honouring-the-50s mold.
