zdbd – freak out! (1966) – summary

Overall, 1966’s Freak Out! is a stellar debut album, filled with catchy, poppy songs, satirizing and celebrating the growing counterculture of the time. Zappa introduces many of his signature touches right out of the gate, including the diversity of voices, the ubiquitous xylophone, and the daring compositions – touches that will grow and change as his career matures.

At a whopping 60 minutes of music, Freak Out! is nearly twice the length of some of Zappa’s later, and more famous, records – what a value!
